How to Create a Supportive Real Estate Work Environment
I recently joined Timothy Katiano on the Icons of Real Estate Podcast to talk about how to create a supportive real estate work environment.
We discussed how I moved from being a stay-at-home mom for 20 years, taking care of my three children, and now being a grandma to building relationships with clients, balancing life, and building confidence in the real estate industry.
Here is how my journey started:
From Mom Duties to Real Estate: My Story
Before real estate, I was a stay-at-home mom proud of taking care of her kids while relocating 18 times due to my husband’s work in IT.
Throughout our relocations, we bought and sold several properties, making REALTORS® wonder why I hadn’t started a career in real estate. At first, I was hesitant because I enjoyed being a mom who took part-time jobs around her husband’s schedule.
Things changed in 2015 after we moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado. By 2016, I was ready for a full-time job. As my son was graduating and was prepared for college, an agent friend inspired me to get licensed.
In the job I was working at that time, I was tired of spending 40 hours behind a desk and doing tasks that I did not enjoy. Eventually, I joined a broker friend at his small firm as an assistant. A month later, I saw the potential of a new career, and by March of 2017, I had my license.
However, after realizing I wasn’t in the right place to help me grow with my friend, I left and joined RE/MAX Properties, Inc. I joined their new agent program in 2018, and that same year, I closed 7.3 million in sales, closed 18 deals, and became their new agent of the year.
My love for helping people, connecting with them, and mentoring agents pushed me to start mentoring new agents in 2019. That same year, I closed 7.2 million.
In 2020, I hired an assistant and closed 14.7 million. In 2021, I decided to build my team, which has been growing ever since. Our goal as a team is not just about making money; what drives me is my passion for connecting with people.
Strategies for Creating a Supportive Real Estate Workplace
Professionalism is an integral part of our work ethic. By building relationships with our clients and team members, we learned how to create a supportive real estate work environment.
Our team at Tava Homes Group believes in the power of mentorship and teamwork. We base our relationships on helping and guiding each other, understanding that success in real estate is not a solo journey. We find that we are most successful when we have somebody to motivate and someone else to teach. This is what makes us good agents, and this is what drives us as a team.
On our team, we treat each other as equals. We all get better together. I love hearing my team member’s insights because building a successful team is about creating a give-and-take relationship.
Having a Supportive Spouse in Real Estate
My husband and I have always been on a self-improvement journey, learning about each other and learning about ourselves. To improve as an individual, you need to do the following:
- Know who you are
- Learn to communicate
- Understand how you receive information
One of the key factors that allowed me to pursue my real estate career was having a supportive spouse. My husband was always ready to step in and take care of things at home, giving me the freedom to chase my goals. His support and flexibility with my busy schedule were invaluable, and I believe having a supportive partner can make all the difference in this profession.
Having my husband as a coach by my side has also been interesting. We created a business where he is the strategist, and I am the executor. Moreover, we balance our lives through a coaching program based on relationship-building skills.
To ensure a healthy team, my husband also coaches my team members and checks on them and their performance once a month.
Confidence Tips for New Real Estate Agents
New agents building up their confidence for the job first need to learn about themselves and find the tools that will help them do so. Disc tests and Real Strengths are some of the tools that will help you learn about yourself.
Suppose you are new to the industry and afraid of being asked about your experience. In that case, you can gain confidence by assuring clients that even if you don’t know the answer, you know how to get it through your team of more experienced agents.
Borrowing confidence and experience as a new agent is what helped me when I started in real estate.
When is the Right Time to Buy a House
Buying a house depends on your individual needs. As a real estate agent, I don’t believe in telling clients they must buy a home when it is not the right time for them. I am an advisor to my clients, similar to a financial advisor, and they value my opinions. Therefore, we evaluate each client to determine if now is the right time for them to buy.
People have been buying and selling houses for years and will continue to do so. Therefore, the best time to buy a house is when you need to, for a job change, right-sizing for a growing family, downsizing, or moving closer to family.
